CEAMaS WebGIS  Smartatlas: Handbook for valorisation opportunities mapping

This Handbook provides an overview of the Civil Engineering Applications for Marine Sediments (CEAMaS) web GIS tool and is aimed at those intending to work with the system at a fundamental level. It is intended to serve as a living guide which would enable technically literate users to go beyond the standard WebGIS functionality that is available, and carry out more advanced operations to access the back-end database and to modify entries and update associated metadata. It provides information about the atlas content and how it and the associated technology are structured; how all of the components are managed, from the web content to the various data manipulation functions (i.e., data acquisition, compilation, preparation and documentation); and tips on what to look out for when preparing data in GIS.

The CEAMaS geodataviewer is an initiative that aims to improve access to marine sediments related data and information for North-Western Europe countries through a web-based GIS portal. In addition to allowing users to visualise and query geospatial data, a key aspect of the atlas is that it provides educational and informational materials on each of the data layers displayed as well as on general issues regarding the CEAMaS partners’ coast.

Stakeholder point of view on sediment reuse and management

CEAMaS partners have identified and listed the principal stakeholders for their country and also at an International scale.  A total of one hundred and forty four stakeholders were identified and contacted by each national partner. From this pool of stakeholders 42 have been interviewed using a face to face (in most cases) or phone (in a few cases) interviews. All the different categories of stakeholders have been successfully interviewed.

The same Interview framework has been used in five North Western Europe Countries. This is new knowledge from the CEAMaS investigations and is the first large survey of this type at a European level. Therefore it is a new knowledge providing the basis as a benchmark for futures stakeholders enquiries about sediment re-use in North Western Europe.

The report available for download presents the methodology and the analysis of the stakeholders point of view about sediment re-use. This report demonstrates that there is no common view on sediment management at a North Western Europe scale and that the local context appears to be the main driving forces for a stakeholder point of view.

Sediment re-use, social acceptability: Study in France (report in French)

This report is the Masters Thesis of the Sociology student which was defended in September 2015. The main output presents the societal acceptance of sediment re-use for the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. One hundred inhabitants from the coastal area were interviewed about the potential re-use of marine sediment in their territory or region. It seems that the general society is not well enough informed to provide a consolidated viewpoint about potential sediment re-use. Moreover this report demonstrates that the local inhabitants cannot defend their viewpoint in front of well-informed stakeholders.

Questionnaire surveys were conducted online during July 2015 with local inhabitants and local NGOS. A validation phase also included face to face interviews. A total of one hundred and nine completed questionnaires were returned.

Report on Legislative & Regulatory Regimes in Partner Countries in Respect of the Beneficial Use of Marine Dredge Material

This volume is intended to present an overview of the legislative and regulatory frameworks pertaining to the beneficial use of dredged material (DM) in each of the partner countries (Belgium, France, Ireland, Netherlands and UK). It should be noted that although not exclusively relevant to marine and estuarine settings, sediments arising from lakes and inland rivers are not a focus for the study. In structuring the report the authors have adopted a hierarchical approach, starting with international agreements which provide context for and shape the next tier in which the major pieces of European Legislation are presented. This leads on to the individual National legal instruments and regulations for each country that mainly derive from EU Directives.
